any work been done on symmetry

     Has any work been done on symmetries of  images produced by
various rules? Especially, how the character of the rule affects the
type of symmetry, how you can (or can't) get slight asymmetries (like
in the bodies of various organisms, which are generally symmetrical
but some organs are one-sided only) by symmetric rules, etc. Please
