Several articles have appeared in Computer Music Journal on using complex
dynamics, typically a process to produce 1/f noise. Charles Dodge published
some of the early work along these lines.

I think Carla Scalleti (U. Illinois music dept) has done compositions employing
various Automata. Her KYMA Smalltalk based synthesis and composition environment
used to have musical automata as demonstration objects.

I'm building a system in the MAX music language which is based on coupled map
lattices, closely related to cellular automata. Each cell in a CML computes
a map (a difference equation) controlled by a bifurcation parameter. I have
two versions, one which with mean field coupling and another with local
spin coupling. They have only been running for a week or two, so I haven't
published anything yet or done any serious composition or recording yet.
Keep in touch though, I'll be developing a reference list.
