Cellular automata in ecological modeling?

Dear cell-automata-ers,
I recently came across a journal article (Breckling, _Ecological
Modeling_ 63:13-27) that spoke of cellular automata as being a
'convenient concept' in ecological-applications modeling. To my
knowledge, I have never come across such a model. (I don't mean
algorithms that produce patterns, such as Life, but models of energy
or nutrient flow in real ecosystems -- this is what the journal
_ECological Modeling_ concerns itself with primarily, and I suspect
what Breckling meant.) Are any of you familiar with any such
projects that you would consider to embody cellular automata?
						Thanks in advance.
